"Any idea when you're speaking to Haim?" a text pops up. "I wanted to ask if I can become their newest bandmate."

There's just a single issue: The author likewise wants to be Haim's fourth member. And we're far from alone. A host of celebrated fans have openly petitioned for the honor.

It's clear a special quality is going on. The siblings Este, Danielle and Alana started their career doing sets at small eateries with their parents. Now they're repeated Grammy hopefuls.

Similar to the most iconic groups, they're a inseparable gang. Their music videos often depict them striding in unison down the roads of Los Angeles. During performances, they jam with such unfettered happiness you can't help but think, "I wish to be a piece of that, too."

"The amount of times on tour that audience members approached us and said, 'Seeing you perform, I picked up a drum kit'," says Alana, the most junior of the Haim siblings. "It is the ultimate compliment. It is a prize in itself. We have succeeded if we can motivate people to form a group."

"And thus anyone are welcome to be the fourth part of the family."

Historic Milestone

The group have called into a break, where they're recovering after an extensive tour in promoting their latest album, I Quit.

They're currently celebrating the news it's been nominated for best rock album at the Grammy Awards – with Haim the first all-woman band ever in the running for the trophy.

"I follow the lists every year, so it almost feels like The Truman Show when your name is called," notes Alana. "I immediately called my sisters to say, 'Did I hear this correctly or am I dreaming'?"

The importance of the honor isn't lost on the trio.

"We truly set out to make a guitar-driven album this time, so it's a major step," adds Alana. "But we're just appreciative for the pioneers that inspired us."

Heartbreak and Laughter

The album emerged from a phase of personal change. All three sisters found themselves single, and the music captures that strange liminal space where you're glad to be free, but not yet ready to move on.

The themes detail departures and farewells. The sisters seek love, but not the kind of love they've got. You can hear them figuring out in real life who they are becoming.

"That's a perfect description, yes," says Danielle. "I Quit is kind of like a personal statement. You have to actively work on blocking the noise and saying, 'I couldn't care less what people think'."

Evolution of Sound

That newfound confidence called for a new sound – more raw and powerful than anything the band had done before.

For Danielle, who helped produce the album, that started with the drums.

"The drum sound is such a detailed thing, and I focus so intensely about it," she says.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the name of our book," laughs Alana. "I always say, our albums won't commence until we find the right drum sound."

Stories and Collective Laughter

The band's honesty inspired the album's promotional campaign, where the sisters revealed some of their personal tales.

Someone broke up with Este over a medical consideration. Alana shared a story of travelling to celebrate New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a casual gesture at midnight.

"When you're going through these breakups, you just feel like there's no light," notes Alana. "Thus to be able to laugh at those stories and hear others tell you even crazier stories, it's so amazing."

A Secure Legacy

It's not difficult sense a change in the band. Now, Haim are more confident of their standing in the music world.

They're festival headliners, with hit albums and an global audience.

Yet the sister act will consistently be their top focus.

"Me and my siblings have been playing music since I was a young child," shares Alana. "There is no alternative that we were meant to do. And I'm really grateful we've reached this point and we're still going strong."
