French authorities will start stopping small boats in English Channel after British demands
France has agreed to start stopping small boats in the English Channel, following an extended period of insistence from the UK.
This policy shift follows the British leader wrote to the French leader urging him to support the initiative and stating there presently "lack any effective deterrent" in the maritime passage.
French maritime police will be allowed to intercept the small boats at sea, but exclusively prior to they've picked up their passengers, according to authoritative statements.
French authorities have infrequently intervened to prevent the heavily loaded boats departing from the shoreline because it is viewed as too great a danger to both personnel and individuals.
"It is crucial that we deploy these tactics this month... We have zero effective prevention in the Channel."
Currently, a French maritime police representative says officers will begin taking action at sea, with the aim of safeguarding human life.
Significantly, the spokesperson excluded the use of nets to stop boats, which had earlier been suggested as a possible technique to disable the engines of the boats.
The decision to take action at all is a major advancement, following a short-lived change towards a stricter approach this summer, which ceased when the former government official left government.
This was demonstrated in July, preceding a meeting between the Prime Minister and President, when authorities were witnessed wading into the sea to damage the sides of a boat.
Now French officials will once more be permitted to stop boats prior to they collect asylum-seeking individuals from the coastal areas of northern France, however it's not clear how the small boats will be prevented.
Powerful gusts are currently postponing the commencement of interceptions and the human trafficking gangs will be looking for ways to adapt to evade detection, as they have done so often in the past.
The Home Office and Downing Street have been approached for response.
