Individuals Stopping Slimming Injections Regain Pounds Far More Rapidly Than People Using Diet and Exercise

Obesity treatment involves long-term strategies.

New research reveals that patients who come off popular GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover shed pounds far faster than those who end conventional diet and exercise plans.

Findings released in a leading health publication shows that while obese individuals often shed about a fifth of their total mass while on the medication, the mass is regained at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.

"People purchasing such treatments need to be cognizant of the risk of fast rebound weight gain when the therapy is stopped," warns researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of regain implies a return to starting mass within about 18 months.

Analyzing Treatments

The analysis, which reviewed 37 of studies involving thousands of patients, contrasted the effects of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.

The team point out that individuals who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone usually see a slower creep back—around 100 grams monthly—once they finish.

Understanding the Rapid Rebound

Doctors propose the mode of action of the drugs accounts for the accelerated regain.

These medications imitate a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which helps regulate appetite.

"Long-term administration of the hormone concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production may cause the system to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and could lessen responsiveness to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.

"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' means appetite is unsuppressed, making overeating much more probable."

A Lifelong Condition?

Health authorities advise the injections for people with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.

Many experts say that, due to the high risk of weight regain, the therapy is often ongoing.

This perspective is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the results "highlight the chronic nature of excess weight," comparing it to managing conditions like hypertension.

User Accounts

Users who have stopped the medication explain a intense resurgence of appetite.

"It was like a switch activating and I was suddenly starving," described a patient.

This challenge is exacerbated if patients have not adopted sustainable dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.

Widespread Adoption

Recent estimates show that millions of adults in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with demand being substantial.

  • Use is higher among women than males.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
  • A large proportion obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

Finally, clinicians stress that while the jabs are effective tools for weight loss, they are not a permanent solution and lasting health benefits relies on integrated behavioural management.
