Tetris Didn't Triumph at The Game Awards — An Additional Classification Could Fix That

As any major honors show draws close, one notices a demand for the addition of new categories to recognize underappreciated efforts and delight the spirits of fans dedicated to specific genres.

My colleague previously argued advocating for terror-themed awards. That would rule. So would board games, which is a dedicated supporter's campaign. But they will have to forgive me for pushing forward because like all blinkered fanatics, I have a cast-iron argument backing this proposal remains most pressing and important of all. The demand is this: There should be a classification for brain-teasing titles.

Categorizing Game Types

Organizing artistic expressions is not a science; it’s very subjective, and inevitably spark debates resulting in unclear classifications. This explains why movie academies steer clear of genre categories. Yet it remains an essential concession for the industry of interactive entertainment, that demonstrate such variety they barely qualify a single creative category.

To recognize the complete range of achievement in video games to receive acknowledgment, and for games of all stripes to receive proper recognition, genre categories are essential.

Current Gaming Award Categories

Prominent interactive entertainment events offer these genre categories for Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Collectively, these award types actually cover a lot of ground, making space possible for numerous titles.

Not so for puzzle games. There’s simply nowhere to put them. Examine these examples from outstanding current releases, each quite distinct: structural challenges from a specific release, intense tile-matching of another game, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles in another game. Where could they possibly go within current classifications? Nowhere, that’s where.

Recognition Challenges

Numerous examples exist outstanding logic titles published annually without proper recognition in entertainment awards, unless they happen to qualify classification types such as Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, or the extremely competitive Indie races.

  • An iconic brain-teaser wasn’t nominated in any category that year
  • A different innovative game received no nominations in 2019
  • A beloved organization game was overlooked recently
  • Only a few puzzle games barely qualified for small studio or handheld classifications

Significance of Puzzle Games

Frequently they represent compact experiences, however the design behind logic titles holds tremendous importance. Famous handheld logic titles rank among most popular titles worldwide continuing this trend for many years.

The famous puzzle experience challenges well-known building titles for the title of most purchased experience; it also contends for top gaming experience. Logic titles represent cornerstones within interactive entertainment, and engaging across multiple categories.

The Solution and Justification

Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter that issue. You could fill multiple candidates engaging, different, qualified experiences annually without trouble — or rather, with difficulty, since numerous excellent numerous deserving experiences.

Restating the point, these are games without proper classification in important events. Puzzle game makers are working at the hard edge game development, creating some of the purest expressions of gaming itself. Comparable to cinema stunt performers, they merit acknowledgment. Let’s not keep them waiting decades.
