The tournament joins the American and Australian Opens in employing replay systems.
Video review systems are set to arrive at Wimbledon this year.
Athletes will gain the right to question certain calls from the chair umpire, following the system currently in place at both the US Open and the Aussie major.
This innovation will be operational on Centre Court and Court One throughout the Championships and on the other four show courts when they are staging singles matches.
This step arrives only a season following the AELTC implemented electronic line calling, which effectively ended the longstanding tradition of line judges.
Scope of Challenges
Competitors will not be permitted to dispute the call of the ELC system, but they can ask for the umpire to review other decisions, including:
- If a tennis ball has bounced twice.
- If a shot made contact with an rival's racket or body during play.
- Potential interference end of a rally.
Importantly, there is no limit on the number of reviews a player can ask for.
Practical Application
A recent case took place in a recent tournament last week, where a top player used the video challenge against his opponent.
The British player admitted it was a difficult call for the official, but thought his rival had "used the regulations quite well."
Official Aurelie Tourte watched a replay and ruled Draper was responsible for hindrance, awarding the rally to Medvedev.
Growing Trend
Video reviews aren't exclusive to Grand Slams. The system has been in use at the US Open for two years and the Australian Open this year.
Additionally, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the ATP circuit plans to have the system implemented at every one of its tournaments.
Further Updates
Another change at The Championships this year will be the introduction of visual indicators on scoreboards to complement the audio calls from the ELC system.
This addresses instances where spectators have occasionally been unsure if a shot was in or out.
In other news, with precisely 100 days remaining until the start of the Championships, organizers have also revealed an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
